Graduate Certificate in Accounting

Graduate Certificate Program Policies 
 

This certificate emphasizes an understanding of accounting and financial-reporting processes and how accounting information can be used to improve financial operating efficiency and to make well-informed organizational strategic decisions. The vision of accountants as information providers has particular appeal to those who see accounting as useful in corporate decision-making.

 

What do graduates do with the Accounting Certificate?

Edgewood College has a reputation for excellence in accounting; its accounting graduates have achieved a competitive rate of success in passing the CPA examination. Local and national accounting firms, private industry, and governmental agencies recruit Edgewood graduates. 

 

Who is the Accounting Certificate designed for?

This program is designed for individuals who have earned a baccalaureate degree in a discipline other than accounting and who are seeking functional competency or a career transition into the accounting field. The certificate in accounting may also suit professionals whose education already includes accounting and who wish to pursue accounting at an advanced level, without enrolling in a full graduate program.

 

What do I have to do to obtain the Accounting Certificate?
To earn this certificate students select and complete at least five of the ten 3-credit courses below. 15 credits in total are needed to earn the certificate. The choice of courses allows a focus in a specific area of accounting. Advising on obtaining professional accounting certification is available to admitted students.

Bus 704 Intermediate Accounting II (Spring; Days and Evenings)
  Prerequisite: BUS 703

Bus 705 Cost Accounting (Fall; odd yrs. evenings, even yrs days)

Bus 706 Auditing (Spring; odd yrs evenings, even yrs days)
  Prerequisite: BUS 704 or concurrent registration

Bus 707 Income Tax Accounting I ( Fall; odd yrs evenings, even yrs days)
  Prerequisite: BUS 707

Bus 709 Income Tax Accounting II (Spring; even yrs evenings, odd yrs days)

Bus 723 Law II (Spring; odd yrs evenings, even yrs days)

Bus 725 Accounting Systems (Fall; even yrs evenings, odd yrs days)
  Prerequisite: BUS 703 or concurrent registration

Bus 726 Advanced Accounting I (Fall; evenings)
  Prerequisite: BUS 704

Bus 727 Advanced Accounting II (Spring; evenings)
  Prerequisite: BUS 704

Accounting Certificate Program Prerequisites

The following are a list of accounting certificate prerequisites.  Students may take needing the following Edgewood College courses to fulfill the prerequisites. The courses are 3 credits, unless otherwise noted:

 

  • Bus 500 Basic Mathematics (summer)

  • CS150 Basic Computer (Fall, Spring, Summer)

  • Bus 501 Business Concepts (Fall)
    (Prerequisite; Bus 500 or equivalent) or Math 122 and Bus 280)

  •  Bus 502 Business Analysis (Spring)
    Prerequisite; Bus 500 or equivalent; or a Calculus course

  • Bus 503 Intro Business Statistics (Fall)
    (prerequisite Bus 502; ) or Math 121 Statistics

  • Bus 504 Legal Environments (Spring) or Bus 304 Law 1

  • Bus 602 Accounting for Managers (Fall, Spring)
    (Prerequisite; Bus 501, 502, 503) Concurrent registration in 501 or 502 allowed;
    or BUS 281 Managerial Accounting (Fall, Spring, Some Summers)

    Accounting Certificate checklist

·     CMA PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION

The five courses BUS 703, 704, 705, 706 and 725, span the accounting topics for the Certified Managerial Accounting (CMA) exam. In addition to accounting topics, the CMA exam requires background in economics, operations management, organizational behavior, and corporate finance. CPA PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION  

The entire set of ten certificate courses spans the accounting courses required to sit for the Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) exam.
